The purpose of the sociology department is to make the student more aware of the society and the world in which he or she lives. The sociological perspective is of great value in a world where societies are increasingly complex and the societal forces that influence our lives more indirect and subtle. An understanding of society is useful in any career, including the most important and basic career of all,  the leading of a successful and worthwhile life.

"Sharon is one of those unassuming students who not only methodically and intelligently completes her class work, but has also been active in service learning at Wofford. Sharon is one of several sociology departmental award winners who has chosen to go into teaching, which we applaud and trust she will make a great one." (an excerpt from Professor Ginocchio's introduction of Sharon during Convocation in May 2007).
