Welcome!  Begun in 2005, Wofford’s program in African / African-American Studies offers students an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the cultural, historical, economic and political aspects of African and African American life and society.

Combining a traditional liberal arts perspective with interdisciplinary skills of investigation, analysis, and communication, the program draws from the disciplines and faculty of art history, English, history, philosophy, religion, sociology, and theatre/drama, and culminates in an independent capstone project designed to integrate learning from two or more areas of study.

To complete the program, students must take 18 hours of coursework (five 3-hour courses and one 3-hour capstone project) from at least two different disciplines. AAAS offers a certificate to all Wofford students regardless of their major, provided they meet program requirements. AAAS courses can be counted toward distributive requirements of the college. His full name is Cosmas Chivandire, but most folks around Wofford know him simply as "Coz." He’s performed in a dramatic reading of an African-American play. He’s a member of a local rap group, The Pharmacy, and helped teach an Interim course on hip-hop. He used to play on the Wofford tennis team. He studies English and is also working toward a certification in the program in African and African-American Studies, an interdisciplinary program bringing together courses in English, theatre, sociology, history and other fields.
